SUMMARY:WRIQ Pilot Course: Asbestos Training for the Waste and Recycling Industry
DESCRIPTION:WRIQ is launching a limited pilot delivery of the nationally accredited course Recognising and Responding to Asbestos Risk in the Waste and Recycling Industry (11395NAT).\nThis training has been developed specifically for workers in the waste and recycling sector who may encounter asbestos-containing materials during routine operations. Participants will gain practical knowledge to recognise asbestos risks\, respond safely to incidents\, and follow correct procedures to protect workers\, facilities and the community. \nThe course includes two nationally recognised units of competency:• Recognise asbestos risk in waste and recycling (NAT11395001)• Respond to asbestos containing materials in waste and recycling (NAT11395002) \nParticipants will learn how to identify asbestos-containing materials\, conduct safe inspections of waste loads\, use appropriate PPE\, and apply correct containment and reporting procedures when asbestos is discovered. \nAs part of this industry pilot\, WRIQ is offering a limited number of fully funded places for WRIQ members. Feedback from participants will help refine the training before wider industry rollout. \nPlaces are limited and early registration is encouraged. \nCourse dates:\n\nMonday 23 March 10am to 12pm\nTuesday 24 March 10am to 12pm\nMonday 30 March 10am to 12pm\nTuesday 31 March 10 to 12pm\n\nWho should attend\nThis course is designed for workers across the waste and recycling industry who may encounter asbestos-containing materials during routine operations. \nIt is suitable for: \n\nLandfill and transfer station operators\nResource recovery and recycling facility workers\nWaste transport and logistics operators\nSupervisors and site managers responsible for waste operations\nHealth\, safety and environmental personnel working in waste facilities\nAny workers required to identify or respond to suspected asbestos in waste loads\n\nWhat you will learn\nParticipants will gain practical knowledge and nationally accredited training to safely manage asbestos risks in waste and recycling environments. \nKey learning outcomes include: \n\nHow to recognise common asbestos-containing materials in waste streams\nUnderstanding the health risks and legal responsibilities associated with asbestos\nConducting safe inspections of incoming waste loads\nIdentifying friable and non-friable asbestos materials\nApplying appropriate PPE and safety controls\nIsolating\, containing and reporting suspected asbestos incidents\nFollowing workplace procedures and regulatory requirements when asbestos is discovered\n\nPilot course benefits\nThis pilot delivery provides an opportunity for WRIQ members to access nationally accredited training at no cost while helping shape the future of asbestos training for the industry. \nParticipants will benefit from: \n\nFree enrolment for WRIQ members during the pilot stage\nNationally accredited training tailored specifically to the waste and recycling industry\nPractical skills that improve workplace safety and regulatory compliance\nIncreased confidence in identifying and responding to asbestos risks\nThe opportunity to provide feedback to help refine the course before wider industry rollout\n\n  \n \n \n \n \n \n REGISTRATIONFree of chargeWebinar will be held on Zoom. SUMMARY:Future Waste Resources Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Waste Recycling Industry Association Queensland (WRIQ) is pleased to invite you to join us for the 2026 Future Waste Resources Symposium (FWR 2026)\, to be held on 18 & 19 March 2026 at the Intercontinental Brisbane. \nFollowing on from FWR 2025\, this streamlined event has been designed to maintain momentum and foster continued collaboration across Queensland’s waste and recycling sector\, bringing industry\, government and other stakeholders together to address the most pressing and complex challenges facing Queensland’s waste industry. \nThe program will focus on four key areas: \n\nStrengthening collaboration between councils and industry to improve household waste recycling and diversion\nExploring regional and metropolitan approaches to lift municipal solid waste (MSW) recycling rates\nProviding feedback to the Queensland Infrastructure Plan as part of the State’s Waste Strategy Review\nUnderstanding the systemic complexities and identifying actionable next steps for real change\n\nThe challenges facing our industry are complex\, but they also present significant opportunities – for innovation\, for economic development\, and for positioning Queensland as a national leader in recycling. \nWe invite you to take part in the Future Waste Resources Symposium and contribute to shaping a more sustainable\, resilient and collaborative waste and recycling future for Queensland. \n \n Click Here to go to the FWR website

SUMMARY:WRIQ Member Luncheon: Temporary Emissions Licences for the Waste & Recycling Industry
DESCRIPTION:Join WRIQ for a panel discussion and sit-down lunch exploring the role and application of Temporary Emissions Licences (TELs) in Queensland.\nTELs are emergency environmental approvals granted by the Department of the Environment\, Tourism\, Science and Innovation (DETSI) to support industry operations during significant disruptions\, such as flooding\, fire or other natural disasters. These short-term licences allow businesses to temporarily release contaminants into the environment and operate outside of existing environmental conditions where it is necessary for safety or continuity\, and where the event itself was unforeseen. \nThis event will offer attendees practical insights into how TELs are applied in real-world settings\, the regulatory processes involved\, and the operational challenges faced by industry when responding to emergency situations. \nOur panel of government and industry representatives will reflect on recent experiences and explore lessons learned to inform better environmental and regulatory outcomes in future scenarios. The discussion will use recent TELs issued in the Swanbank region following Tropical Cyclone Alfred as a key case study. \nPanellists: \n\nBrad Wirth\, Dept of the Environment\, Tourism\, Science and Innovation\nScott Blanchard\, Dept of the Environment\, Tourism\, Science and Innovation\nMichael Correll\, Lantrak\nSarah Collins\, REMONDIS Australia\n\nFacilitated by: Alison Price\, WRIQ \n \n \n \n \n \n REGISTRATIONWRIQ Members: $150 inc GST • Non Members: $200 inc GSTTwo-course lunch and beverages will be providedBookings close 12noon\, Monday 3 November 2025CLICK HERE TO REGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Future Waste Resources Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Waste Recycling Industry Association Queensland (WRIQ) takes great pleasure in inviting you to our 2025 Future Waste Resources Symposium from 12 – 14 February 2025 at the Sea World Conference Centre on the Gold Coast.\n \nOur waste recycling industry contains dedicated people with a combined thousands of years’ experience pioneering waste recycling in Queensland\, interstate and overseas. Engage with Queensland’s waste industry leaders\, local governments and State Government to identify practical solutions to Queensland’s waste and recycling challenges. \nFollowing the release of the Queensland Government’s Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy (the Strategy) in July 2019\, early results post implementation of the Strategy show that continued action is needed to achieve Queensland’s waste reduction goals and targets. \nThis unique conference brings together the resource recovery industry\, government\, manufacturing\, businesses and the community to examine and develop strategies that improve waste management and resource recovery through collective action. At the core of this event are real-life\, practical solutions addressing systemic issues that are holding the industry back from becoming a key player in Queensland’s economic future. \nWe invite you to take part in the Future Waste Resources Symposium to examine the necessary processes required to advance the industry and develop much closer and more collaborative relationships between industry and government. \n  \n\n\n\nFOR MORE DETAILS PLEASE VISIT THE SYMPOSIUM WEBSITE\nwriqsymposium.com.au
