As the global focus on sustainability intensifies, the waste recycling industry plays a crucial role in environmental stewardship. Several government funding opportunities are available to support initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, innovation, and growth within this sector:
1. Regional Economic Futures Fund
- Region: QLDDescription: A $200 million fund supporting economic development projects aligned with global decarbonisation, benefiting regional communities.
- Funding Value: $200 million
- Deadline: Open Consultation
2. Circular Economy Investment Program
- Region: QLD
- Description: This $5 million program encourages waste minimisation and resource circulation at their highest value. Open to various entities, it supports projects that reduce consumption of virgin materials and offer lasting solutions for products or materials with few existing solutions in Queensland.
- Funding Value: $250,000 – $750,000 per grant
- Deadline: Stage 1 applications close 3pm, Monday 29 July 2024
3. Recycling and Jobs Fund – Industry Development (RJFID)
- Region: QLD
- Description: Aims to create significant uplift in industry capability to recover and recycle resources at scale, assist with the development of precincts in strategic locations, and support the Queensland manufacturing sector. It supports large-scale recycling projects that demonstrate clear improvement in the recycling process and impact waste diversion from landfill.
- Funding Value: Up to $10 million per project, with a maximum of 50% of total eligible project cost. Initially, $45 million is allocated to this program.

Focus areas for the RJFID include:
- Mixed Commercial and Industrial (C&I) Waste Streams:
- Projects that significantly retain material in the economy, reduce material for disposal, or fill gaps in the supply chain.
- Projects that impact the recovery of difficult end-of-life material streams and are scalable across locations.
- Renewable Energy Infrastructure:
- Projects providing solutions for the recovery, reprocessing, or recycling of renewable energy infrastructure, particularly solar panels.
- End-of-Life Electrical and Electronic Products and Batteries:
- Projects providing solutions for the recovery, reprocessing, or recycling of products like household appliances, electric vehicle batteries, and stationary storage batteries.
- Types of Supported Projects:
- New infrastructure, expansions, or equipment upgrades for recycling/processing facilities.
- High-value recovery processing technologies.
- Mobile processing plants with high recovery rates.
- Increasing end markets for recovered or repurposed waste products.
- On-shoring processes previously requiring export of materials for processing.
Waste Recycling Industry Queensland (WRIQ) recently partnered with Ronan Analytics (RA) a Brisbane based consultancy who specialise in workforce and industry data to assist with completion of a number of funding rounds in 2024 to secure critical workforce training and participation resources to the sector, RA successfully led a regional Queensland based manufacturing through the intensive funding application process for Queensland’s Industry Partnership Program (IPP), securing $6 million of support for their advanced manufacturing project.
