As a waste material, asbestos has some unusual characteristics: it is a hazardous waste generated from across all of society rather than from a particular industry; its preferred fate is burial in landfill; and it is among the highest risk materials for waste industry employees to manage. As a result, asbestos poses a unique waste management challenge.*

This session will address the following topics specific to the waste and resource recovery industry:

• visual identification of possible asbestos in waste (suitable for inspecting trucks)
• safety precautions to take when possible asbestos is identified
• ways the recycling industry can deal with possible exposure risks (e.g. air monitors, sprinklers, PPE at all times) in waste processing and recycling environments.
