TELs are emergency environmental approvals granted by the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) to support industry operations during significant disruptions, such as flooding, fire or other natural disasters. These short-term licences allow businesses to temporarily release contaminants into the environment and operate outside of existing environmental conditions where it is necessary for safety or continuity, and where the event itself was unforeseen.
This event will offer attendees practical insights into how TELs are applied in real-world settings, the regulatory processes involved, and the operational challenges faced by industry when responding to emergency situations.
Our panel of government and industry representatives will reflect on recent experiences and explore lessons learned to inform better environmental and regulatory outcomes in future scenarios. The discussion will use recent TELs issued in the Swanbank region following Tropical Cyclone Alfred as a key case study.
